Gary Y. Okihiro is a visiting professor of American Studies and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration at Yale University, and professor emeritus of international and public affairs at Columbia University.  He received his PhD in African history from UCLA, and taught at Humboldt State, Santa Clara, Cornell, and Columbia.  He is author of many field-building books, including his latest, The Boundless Sea: Self and History (2019) and Third World Studies: Theorizing Liberation (2016).  He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Studies Association and the Association for Asian American Studies, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of the Ryūkyūs, Okinawa.
