Deb Vargas, Associate Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration, is leading a seminar for the 2026 program of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute. Established in 1978, the Institute offers seminars led by Yale faculty for K-12 teachers from New Haven Public Schools.
Vargas’s 2026 seminar, “Latine Media, Representation, and Cultural Politics,” draws from cinema, radio, and other popular media forms to explore the cultural politics of difference in Latine representation. It explores how discourses of race, gender, and sexuality pertain to broader ideologies of citizenship and belonging within respective historical contexts. The seminar runs from February to the beginning of July and each Fellow will complete the seminar by creating a curriculum unit to teach in their New Haven classroom using Yale’s resources.
